Prayer is one of the most important practices among Manichaeans. We are told in the Gospel of Mar Mani that “when the First Man came to his senses, he raised up a prayer seven times to the Father of Greatness (Abba d’Rabbuta), and the Father heard when he prayed.” (4:2)
We also read that “the first duty of the Hearer which he does is Fasting, Prayer and Alms-giving.” (Gospel of Mar Mani 42:1)
Because prayer is such an important aspect in the life of Manichaeans, we have a variety of liturgical texts that are used for this very purpose. Along with standard liturgical texts, Mar Mani Khaila also encourages his disciples to recite personal prayers from the heart and from the Scriptures.
