How do we “conquer the Sin”?

“If you strengthen yourselves and hold to one another and in one time stand on this living Truth which has been visible to you, then all of you from small to great can conquer the Sin which opposes you. But if you divide on this Truth, what may not happen? You will be both split up by it and also subdued under Sin’s hand, and you will be humbled also under all its Powers that oppose you.” (Gospel of Mani 47:1)

Mani the Final Prophet?

Question
Do Manichaeans believe that Mani was the final prophet in a long line of prophets?

Answer
Manichaeans do not believe that the Blessed Prophet Mar Mani was the final prophet or that divine revelation ended with his earthly ministry. Within our tradition, God’s guidance to humanity is understood as a continuing work, expressed through Divine Messengers who appear at different times and among different peoples.

Mani is honored as the Apostle of Light, a divinely appointed Messenger who received and proclaimed the Pure Teaching from the Father of Greatness (Abba d’Rabbuta). His mission was to reveal the knowledge necessary for the liberation of the soul and to bring together the truths previously communicated through God’s Messengers. Mani recognized earlier religious teachers, including Jesus, Zoroaster, and the Buddha, as important figures in the history of divine revelation. His teachings presented the Message of Light in ways that could be understood by people of different cultures and religious backgrounds.

Throughout history, Manichaeism spread across Persia, Mesopotamia, Central Asia, India, China, and the Mediterranean world. As the Faith reached different lands, its apostles and teachers communicated the same essential spiritual message through the languages, customs, and religious expressions familiar to their audiences. Consequently, Manichaean communities sometimes incorporated Christian, Buddhist, and other cultural influences into their religious literature, artwork, and practices while preserving their distinctive teachings concerning God, Light, Darkness, and the liberation of the soul.

Some historical interpretations have described Mani as the final prophet or the culmination of a succession of religious messengers. Such descriptions reflect particular understandings of his mission and should not automatically be taken to mean that all Manichaeans believe divine revelation has permanently ceased.

Our Faith affirms that the Father of Greatness has not abandoned humanity or withdrawn His divine guidance. We believe that the Blessed Prophet Mar Mani continues his sacred mission, manifesting himself to the Elect and providing divine revelation for the instruction and spiritual strengthening of the faithful.

For us, Mani’s greatness does not depend upon his being the last prophet. Rather, we honor him as the Blessed Apostle of Light, whose divinely revealed teachings continue to guide souls toward righteousness, spiritual awakening, and their ultimate return to the eternal Kingdom of Light.

Where Do I Begin?

Beginning Your Journey in the Manichaean Faith

A Guide for Sincere Seekers of the Light

Those who feel drawn to the Manichaean Faith (آیینِ مانی) often ask a simple but important question: “Where do I begin?”

If you are sincerely seeking to understand the teachings of the Blessed Prophet Mar Mani, we welcome you. The journey into the Faith begins with an open heart, a desire to know the One True God, and a willingness to learn and live according to the Pure Teaching. You do not need to understand everything immediately. Spiritual understanding develops through prayer, study, contemplation, and the daily practice of righteousness.

A good place to begin is with the Prayer of Emanations, one of the prayers of our Faith. Set aside a little time each day for quiet prayer, turning your thoughts toward the Father of Greatness (Abba d’Rabbuta) and seeking His Light and guidance. Prayer helps us cultivate spiritual awareness and reminds us that our lives have a divine purpose beyond the concerns of the material world.

We also encourage you to begin reading and studying The Gospel of the Prophet Mani, translated and compiled by Duncan Greenlees. This important collection introduces the teachings of the Blessed Prophet and provides a foundation for understanding Manichaean beliefs, spiritual responsibilities, and the liberation of the soul. Read slowly and thoughtfully. Consider how these teachings apply to your own life, and return to passages that you find particularly meaningful.

Practicing the Faith Wherever You Live

Manichaeism is a living religious tradition, with followers in Iran, Afghanistan, China, Japan, India, Spain, the United States, and other parts of the world. However, Manichaean congregations are not available in every community, and some believers must practice their Faith privately because of their circumstances.

If you live in a place where there are no other Manichaeans nearby, do not be discouraged. You can begin your spiritual life at home through regular prayer, scripture reading, contemplation, and acts of kindness. Your relationship with God does not depend upon living near a congregation.

Many of our brothers and sisters maintain their religious observances in their homes, setting aside time for the daily prayers, studying the sacred writings, and seeking to put the Pure Teaching into practice. Even when you are physically separated from other believers, you remain part of a wider community of faith.

Our website, manichaean.org, provides religious teachings, prayers, and other resources intended to assist both established members and sincere seekers. We encourage you to explore these materials and become familiar with the spiritual foundations of our Faith.

Those wishing to communicate with others may also find fellowship through online communities, including our Manichaean group on MeWe: https://mewe.com/join/manichaean, which has been moderated by members of the Faith. Online fellowship can be especially helpful for individuals who have no local congregation.

Understanding the Teachings of Mar Mani

As you begin your studies, you may encounter different organizations and religious movements using the names “Manichaean,” “Manichaeism,” or “Religion of Light.” Some follow interpretations or teachings that differ considerably from those presented on this website.

We respect the right of others to pursue their religious understanding, but we wish to make clear that the Manichaean Faith represented by manichaean.org is independent and is not affiliated with other organizations unless expressly stated.

Our teachings are centered upon the sacred message of the Blessed Prophet Mar Mani, with particular attention given to The Gospel of the Prophet Mani compiled by Duncan Greenlees, alongside other surviving Manichaean scriptures and historical sources.

We encourage sincere seekers to examine religious teachings carefully, study the scriptures, and distinguish the teachings attributed to Mar Mani from later interpretations or ideas introduced by other movements. This careful approach helps preserve the integrity of the Pure Teaching while allowing each student to grow in knowledge and understanding.

Walking in the Light

Above all, remember that becoming acquainted with the Manichaean Faith is not simply an intellectual exercise. The teachings of Mar Mani invite us to transform the way we live.

We are called to worship the Father of Greatness, speak truthfully, cultivate compassion, avoid unnecessary harm to living beings, overcome selfishness, and gradually free ourselves from attachments that hinder our spiritual growth. Prayer and study are important, but they should also bear fruit in our daily conduct.

Do not feel that you must master every teaching or religious observance at once. Begin with what you can faithfully practice, and allow your understanding to deepen as you continue along the Way of Light.

Whether you are living in Iran, elsewhere in Asia, Europe, the Americas, or another part of the world, you are welcome to learn about our Faith and its sacred teachings.

May the Father of Greatness illuminate your understanding, strengthen your heart, and guide you toward the eternal Kingdom of Light.

Peace and Light be with you.
